The School Board met last Tuesday in the School Board room for the first of two meetings in March. The meeting was also online via Zoom. School Board President Melanie Colgan opened the meeting with a moment of silence for Ukraine and families affected by the turmoil in that country.
The School Board recognized the State Champion LAHS Boys Swimming and Diving team, as well as the high school State Chess Champions. In addition, the Scholastic Art winners and members of the Barranca Mesa Chess Tournament team were recognized for their achievements.
School board members Christine Bernstein and Antonio Jaurigue informed the board that they had reviewed the nominations for the 2022 New Mexico School Board Association Excellence in Student Achievement Award and narrowed their choices to two candidates. Nominations were to be submitted by Friday. This award is sponsored by the NMSBA and seeks to promote student achievement in school districts and assist local school boards in recognizing school leaders, staff and other individuals who have played an important role in improving student achievement at the local level. The NMSBA will announce the award recipients next month.
Interim Superintendent Jennifer Guy gave a brief update regarding Covid despite that a new toolkit had not yet been released. The School Board did vote to authorize LAPS administration to make operational decisions around Covid-19 mitigation practices according to current state and national recommendations.
The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 24 at 5:30 pm.
