Coal Gas?

Los Alamos

Los Alamos is a scientific community associated with the Department of Energy.  Local energy projects include solar power, oil from algae, fuel cells, fusion, and modular nuclear power.

So, my question to members of my energy-focused community is –

Given that Europe is dependent upon natural gas supplies;

Given that Russia is a major supplier of natural gas;

Given that Russia is not behaving well by European standards and is not the supplier of choice;

Given that coal is plentiful in Europe and can be converted into coal gas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_gas);

What are the impediments to producing coal gas as a substitute for natural gas in Europe?
