The Los Alamos High School Hilltoppers swim and diving teams travelled to Farmington for the District 2 Championships on February 4 and 5.
The girls team won their ninth straight district title over runner-up Farmington, 442-353
The boys suffered a rare defeat as Farmington edged out the Toppers, 455-390.
There were some really quick season-ending performances and hints the that the state meets will be two of the best ever for the Hilltoppers.
Los Alamos won all six relays, and broke the district record in all six.
The girls scorched a new Los Alamos High School team record in the 200 free relay with a 1:40.00, breaking the previous record of 1:40.43 set in 2004 by the quartet of Schmitt, O’Hara, Padilla, and Matzke.
Members of the new record setting team and their splits: junior Savannah Kimball (26.57), frosh Sophia Pieck (25.31), soph Anna Wetteland (24.08) and senior Kelly Wetteland (24.04).
Other Hilltoppers on district record-setting relays: seniors Kamaya Ronning, Sylvia Holesinger, Orion Henderson, Andy Corliss, and Matias Rougier, and junior Ming Lo.
The Toppers added two 500 swimmers to the state meet team, soph Emily McLaughlin and senior co-captain Caleb Kerstiens.
Soph Hayden Sutton grabbed third in the 100 free in a personal best and won the 100 back, punching two admission tickets to state in preferred events.
Los Alamos boys team cleared a path for district qualifying by our up-and-comers by idling some of the veterans at the meet, opening the door for Farmington’s win.
The boys state meet will be held on Wednesday, February 16, and the girls meet on Saturday, February 19, both at Albuquerque Academy. For the past several years, Los Alamos has boasted the biggest team at the state high school meet.

Girls state meet team: Lacy Albright, Annie Beus, Kylie Burns, Sylvia Holesinger, Allie Holland, Nina Johnson, Savannah Kimball, Emily McLaughlin, Kamaya Ronning, Lena Ronning, Sophia Pieck, Marian Stradling, Ada Tripp, Anna Wetteland, and Kelly Wetteland.
The boys team will attempt to defend their state team titles from 2020 and 2021. The girls will try to improve upon their third place finish from 2021.
