HOUSE DEMOCRATS NEWS RELEASE
On Monday night the House voted unanimously to increase teacher pay to help New Mexico recruit and retain high quality teachers. SB 1would increase minimum educator salary levels in the state’s three-tier licensure system to $50,000, $60,000, and $70,000 for level 1, 2, and 3 teachers respectively.
The bill is sponsored by Representative Debra Sariñana (D-Albuquerque), Senators Mimi Stewart (D-Albuquerque) and Siah Correa Hemphill (D-Silver City).
“In order for our students to thrive, New Mexico teachers should be the best-compensated teachers in the region,” said Rep. Sariñana. “Tonight, we got one step closer to making that happen.”
The bill now goes to the Governor’s desk and she is expected to sign it into law.
