Comments may be submitted via email to rule.feedback@state.nm.us, by fax to (505) 827-6520 or through regular mail. Mail comments to John Sena, Policy Division, New Mexico Public Education Department, 300 Don Gaspar Avenue, Room 121, Santa Fe, NM 87501.
Standards define what children are expected to learn by the end of a school year and are usually updated every ten years. New Mexico has not updated its standards since 2001.
“We need new books and materials for social studies in all of our classrooms across the district,” said Interim Superintendent Jennifer Guy. “Many teachers have very dated materials for social studies and often have to find their own more up-to-date resources.”
Curriculum for the proposed social studies standards will be reviewed after adoption during the 2022-2023 school year. “LAPS will have a transparent review process that will involve teachers, parents and community members.” Interim Superintendent Guy said. “I encourage everyone to review the standards and provide their feedback during this step of the process.”
A public hearing is scheduled on Friday, November 12th from 1 pm to 3 pm in Mabry Hall in the Jerry Apodaca Educational Building, 300 Don Gaspar Avenue in Santa Fe.
