Los Alamos Historical Society Announces Lecture Series Beginning Sept. 14

LOS ALAMOS HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWS RELEASE

Join the Los Alamos Historical Society for our 2021–22 lecture series. Our first lecture will be on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. in Fuller Lodge, with a presentation from Michael Ettema on “Maria and Julian’s Pottery Revolution.” The series continues on second Tuesdays through the fall and spring.

Historical Society lectures are free and follow public health guidelines for indoor gatherings (currently, masks are required inside Fuller Lodge).

For his lecture on Sept. 14, Michael Ettema will talk about the transformation of pottery making at the Pueblo of San Ildefonso by Maria and Julian Martinez, not only with their “black-on-black” innovations but also with new pottery forms and modes of decoration.  After decades of the dominance of blackware pottery at the pueblo, the potter Blue Corn ushered in a new generation of innovations that opened the door for young potters to create their own styles.

Michael Ettema is a member of the International Society of Appraisers (ISA) and has 29 years of experience with American fine and decorative arts and antiques as a museum curator, educator, and director. In addition, he has 10 years of experience with Native American art and fine art of the American West as Santa Fe Director of Medicine Man Gallery, Inc.

Lectures continue at 7 p.m. on Oct. 12, Nov. 9, Feb. 8 (at 5:30 p.m.), Mar. 8, and April 12. Fuller Lodge is at 2132 Central Avenue. This year’s lectures explore local history from the Santa Fe Trail to the college classroom and from atomic poetry to outer space. Find all the details at http://www.losalamoshistory.org/events.
