Public Works Projects: 

The projects listed in this section are being managed by County Public Works staff through contractors. Please note the below information is based on a schedule provided by the contractors and may change due to weather or other delays.  

Canyon Rim Trail Underpass 

The current highway detour will be shifted to the north side of NM502 allowing the contractor to work on the south side of the road installing precast concrete boxes and retaining walls.   

Due to the amount of construction activity that includes trenching, excavation and utility relocation near the trailhead, the trailhead parking lot, and a 100 ft. section of the trail near the trailhead remain closed for safety. AUI is hauling excess material from project site to a site off DP Road. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone. 

North Mesa Roadway and Utilities Improvement Project (Casa de Oro)

TLC Plumbing and Utility continues road and utility improvements on Alamo Rd, Capulin Rd, Tsankawi St, Oro Ct, Tsankawi Ct, Cedro Ct, and Big Rock Loop South.  The contractor will continue removing and replacing concrete sidewalks, driveway aprons and curb and gutter in selected areas along Capulin Rd, and Alamo Rd.  Utility work will continue on Capulin Rd and Tsankawi St including new water and gas main lines.  Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.  

Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic around work zones. Access to residents as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, school bus routes, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to be alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone. 

Canyon Rim Walking Trail 

GME Emulsion, LLC continues trail rehabilitation on Canyon Rim Walking Trail from Knecht St to the trail termini at the parking lot currently under construction with the underpass. The first section of trail repair will be between Knecht St and DP road and second section is from DP Road to the trail termini. These sections of the trail will be closed during the repairs which include mill and overlay, crack sealing, and fog seal.  

No street closure will occur during the construction.  Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, weather permitting.

Leisure Lagoon (addition to the Aquatic Ctr.)

The bike lane along Canyon Road adjacent to the construction area remains closed pending repaving.  Bicyclists are encouraged to ride in the driving lane as the material in the bike lane is soft.  The sidewalk is also closed in this area, but pedestrians can walk in the bike lane area between the traffic control devices and construction fence. 

Traffic & Streets Division Projects: 

The projects listed in this section are being managed by County Traffic & Streets Division staff. Please slow down and use caution within the construction work zones. 

Countywide Clearing of School Trails and Paths

In preparation for school to begin August 12, crews will be clearing school trails and paths starting Monday and continuing until complete. Work hours are daily from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 

39th Street Sidewalk Repairs

Crews will be repairing sections of sidewalk along the east side of 39th St. between Canyon Rd and Gold Street. The sidewalk will be closed.  There will also be some curb and asphalt repair that will impact traffic. Flagging operations will be in place as needed. Construction work will begin on Monday and continue through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

School Zone Cleaning and Striping

In preparation for school to begin August 12, crews will be cleaning and striping school zones throughout the County starting Monday and continuing until completed. Crews will begin at 7:30 a.m. and end by 3:00 p.m. daily. Flagging operations will be in place as needed.

Non-County Projects: 

The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed, but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slow down in work zones. 

Los Alamos Canyon Bridge Repairs (LANL):

Work continues on the west side of the bridge. Pedestrian/bike access is CLOSED Monday – Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; barriers are being removed for access during off-construction hours but pedestrians and bicyclists should use caution if using the pathway. The estimated duration for work to be completed on the west side of the bridge is 3-4 weeks, and the overall project is scheduled to take 6-8 weeks, weather and schedule dependent. 

To avoid congestion and delays, consider using Atomic City Transit as a bus option to cross the bridge. Check out the Route 1 (downtown circulator bus) schedule here:

Motorists are reminded to slow down in the construction area; the speed limit is 15 mph. Allow extra time for your commute during peak travel times in the morning and evening.

Anchor Ranch Rd Milling & Paving (LANL)

Crews continue milling and paving Anchor Ranch Rd from Shed Rd to WETF Rd. 

West Jemez Rd – Eastbound (LANL)

For motorists using eastbound West Jemez, please note that the right turn lane onto Diamond is still closed until August 6. Drivers can still turn onto Diamond. 

DP Rd (Work related to Canyon Walk Apts and The Bluffs – Bethel Development)

Qualcon Builders, LLC – 120 DP Rd Utility Infrastructure Replacement and Roadway Reconstruction

Roadway reconstruction activities continue with concrete collars and sidewalk construction. These activities will impact DP Rd from Trinity Drive to Fire Station #2 with segments of the roadway restricted to one-lane traffic controlled by a flagged/signaled system.  One-lane traffic restrictions will occur only during hours of construction potentially from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily.

The contractor work in DP Road is related to the new Canyon Walk Apartments (under construction) and The Bluffs senior housing (soon to be constructed). The roadway reconstruction includes installation of curb and gutter, sidewalks and paving of the roadway.  All construction activities related to the reconstruction of DP Road will continue during the month of August.
