Road Construction Update:

The projects listed in this section are being managed by County Public Works staff through contractors. Please note the below information is based on a schedule provided by the contractors and may change due to weather or other delays.

Public Works Projects: 

Canyon Rim Trail Underpass 

Detour is active on NM502 which allows the contractor to work on the north side of the road installing precast concrete boxes and wing walls.   

Due to the amount of construction activity that includes trenching, excavation and utility relocation near the trailhead, the trailhead parking lot, and a 100 ft. section of the trail near the trailhead will be closed for safety. AUI will be hauling excess material from project site to a site off DP Road. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.  

ADA improvements along Trinity Drive from Oppenheimer to 39th Street 

Work will continue in the east bound lane at SW corner at the intersection of Trinity Drive at Oppenheimer. Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.  Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic around the work zones. 

Access to residents and businesses as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.  

North Mesa Roadway and Utilities Improvement Project (Casa de Oro)

TLC Plumbing and Utility continues road and utility improvements on Alamo Rd, Capulin Rd, Tsankawi St, Oro Ct, Tsankawi Ct, Cedro Ct, and Big Rock Loop South.  The contractor will continue removing and replacing concrete sidewalks, driveway aprons and curb and gutter in selected areas along Capulin Rd and Alamo Rd.  Utility work will continue on Capulin Rd and Tsankawi St including new water and gas main lines.  Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.  

Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic around work zones. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to be alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone. 

Leisure Lagoon (addition to the Aquatic Ctr.)

The bike lane along Canyon Road adjacent to the construction area remains closed pending repaving.  Bicyclists are encouraged to ride in the driving lane as the material in the bike lane is soft.  The sidewalk is also closed in this area, but pedestrians can walk in the bike lane area between the traffic control devices and construction fence. 

Traffic & Streets Division Projects:

Fuller Lodge – Romero Cabin Sidewalk Closures

Crews will be repairing sidewalks at Fuller Lodge in the front and the back by Romero Cabin. Sidewalks will be closed. Pedestrian traffic should follow detours and safety signs. Work will begin Monday and be completed by Friday. Work will begin each day at 8:30 a.m. and end by 3:00 p.m.

Mountain Trail Sidewalk Closure

Crews will be working on the sidewalk on Mountain Trail the week of July 12th. Pedestrian traffic should follow detours and safety signs. Work will begin each day at 8:30 a.m. and end by 3:00 p.m.

Countywide Road Striping

Crews continue their annual road striping project until complete, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and finishing daily by 3:00 p.m. 

Non-County Projects: 

The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed, but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slow down in work zones. 

Diamond Dr/Embudo Rd Work Saturday (LANL):

Tomorrow (Saturday, July 10) at the intersection of Diamond Dr and Embudo, a four-way stop will be set up while a new traffic-light cabinet is installed. Traffic lights will be turned off.

Los Alamos Canyon Bridge Repairs Begin Monday (LANL):

Work to extend the life of the LA Canyon bridge (sometimes referred to within the community as Omega Bridge) will begin Monday, July 12 on the west side of the bridge. Traffic will be detoured to the east side of the bridge with one lane each direction. Pedestrians can use the sidewalk on the west side, but will need to follow directions from flaggers. To avoid congestion and delays, consider using Atomic City Transit as a bus option to cross the bridge. Speeds will be reduced to 15 mph. Allow extra time for your commute.

Intersection of Pajarito and Puye Rds (LANL)

During the week of July 12, follow new traffic patterns at the intersection of Pajarito and Puye roads near the Transuranic Waste Facility (TWF). Crews are re-installing guardrails. 

West Jemez Rd – Eastbound (LANL)

For motorists using eastbound West Jemez, please note that the right turn lane onto Diamond is closed until July 30. Drivers still can turn onto Diamond. 

West Road (LANL)

In the erosion repair area, West Road continues to be down to one lane with temporary traffic lights at the hairpin turns. Allow extra time to navigate through this area. Follow signals. 

New informational kiosks and trail markers for Reservoir Trail will be installed soon. Use the overflow parking lot (Ice Rink) if using the Reservoir Trail.

DP Rd (Work related to Canyon Walk Apts and The Bluffs – Bethel Development)

Qualcon Builders, LLC – 120 DP Rd Utility Infrastructure Replacement and Roadway Reconstruction

Next week, roadway reconstruction activities continue with roadway grading, and curb & gutter and sidewalk construction.  Paving of DP Road is scheduled to occur on Thursday and Friday (weather permitting). These activities will impact DP Road from Trinity Drive to Fire Station #2 with segments of the roadway restricted to one-lane traffic controlled by a flagged/signaled system.  One-lane traffic restrictions will occur only during hours of construction potentially from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily.

The contractor work in DP Road is related to the new Canyon Walk Apartments (under construction) and The Bluffs senior housing (soon to be constructed). The roadway reconstruction includes installation of curb and gutter, sidewalks and paving of the roadway.  All construction activities related to the reconstruction of DP Road are now expected to be substantially completed by the end of July.
