In the northern reaches of the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range and 220 miles south of Los Alamos, the first-ever atomic device was detonated. Now a National Landmark Historical Site located behind the fences of the vast US Army White Sands Missile Range, Trinity Site will be open for the first time since the pandemic on Oct. 2.

The Los Alamos Historical Society is offering a narrated two-day trip aboard a deluxe coach for the October opening of Trinity Site. Included along the way are visits to volcanic Valley of Fires and the New Mexico Museum of Space History.

Departing Friday morning, Oct. 1, the bus takes participants to Alamogordo, in order to join the early Saturday morning caravan from Tularosa, a southern approach through Mockingbird Gap that offers an expansive overview of the valley location of Trinity Site. Once at Trinity, participants walk a quarter mile to Ground Zero. In addition, the army runs shuttle buses for the three-mile ride to the Schmidt-McDonald Ranch House, the “clean room” for the final prepping of the Trinity core. Back on the bus, the tour will circle north through the Stallion Gate to return to Los Alamos along the route taken by the Trinity test participants in 1945. Lunch will be in Socorro at New Mexico Tech.
