Public Works Projects:
Canyon Rim Trail Underpass (AUI, Inc.)
Detour is active on NM502 which allows the contractor to work on the north side of the road installing precast concrete boxes. The contractor will not be working on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
Due to the amount of construction activity that includes trenching, excavation and utility relocation near the trailhead, the trailhead parking lot, and a 100 ft. section of the trail near the trailhead will be closed for safety. AUI will be hauling excess material from project site to a site off DP Road. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.
The project includes extension of the 10 ft. wide hard surface trail connecting the terminus of the Canyon Rim Trail and existing trailhead to Entrada Drive beneath NM 502 via a reinforced concrete box structure.
ADA improvements along Trinity Drive from Oppenheimer to 39th Street (GM Emulsion)
Work continues on the east bound right shoulder on Trinity Drive starting at 35th Street, continuing east to Timber Ridge Rd.
Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting. GM Emulsion will not be working on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic around the work zones. Access to residents and businesses as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.
North Mesa Roadway and Utilities Improvement Project (Casa de Oro)
Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic around work zones. Access to residents as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, school bus routes, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.
Leisure Lagoon (addition to the Aquatic Ctr.)
Klinger/TLC completed their waterline work for the new tie-in for the Leisure Lagoon adjacent to the project. The bike lane needs to be repaved; it remains closed. The sidewalk along the Aquatic Center remains closed. Klinger will not be working on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
Traffic & Streets Division Projects:
The projects listed in this section are being conducted by County Traffic & Streets crews. Countywide Road Striping
Crews continue their annual road striping project after the Memorial Day holiday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and finishing daily by 3:30 p.m.
Concrete repairs along Kimberly Dr. and Kolleen Ct.
Crews will be replacing sections of concrete in various location along Kimberly Dr and Kolleen Ct Tuesday through Friday. Expect sidewalk closures and roadside congestion. Work hours are 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Non-County Projects:
The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed, but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slow down in work zones. Please direct questions or concerns to the project contact listed below:
West Road Construction (LANL):
West Road is closed to through traffic through June 18 for construction and maintenance. For the public’s safety, this includes bicyclists and pedestrians. Use West Jemez or State Road 4 instead. Road work and roadside fire mitigation are expected to continue into July.
Bikini Atoll Drive (LANL):
Bikini Atoll Drive will be closed to through traffic and pedestrians in June. Follow driver and pedestrian detours. Workers will trench across the road to install a new power line for the Strategic Computing Complex (SCC).
NM502 Roundabout Project (State DOT/Star Paving)
No change from last week; east bound traffic east of the roundabout is shifted to the north side of NM 502 and channeled back into the east bound lane in front of the Crossroads Church.
Canyon Rd is closed at First Street and the intersect of W. Manhattan Loop and Canyon Road.
Arroyo Lane is required to access NM 502 on the north side with east and west bound traffic.
Work continues on landscaping in the medians and roundabout area. Slow down and use caution; be alert to workers in or near the roadway.
The project is expected to wrap up in early July.
R and M Construction – 1010 Central Ave., Sidewalk Closure
Sidewalk access on the north side of Central Ave from 1000 Central Ave. to the entrance to the Bradbury Museum complex is closed to pedestrian traffic through June 15. Pedestrian traffic is detoured to the south side of Central Ave at Knecht Street and then detoured at the intersection of Central Ave and 15th to the north side of Central Ave. Contact: Robert Sanchez 505-927-2027.
R and M Construction – 1010 Central Ave., Road Closure
In addition to the sidewalk closure, a road closure continues from the intersection of Central Ave. at Knecht St. Westbound traffic is detoured to Knecht St. to Trinity Drive. Northbound traffic on Knecht St. is unable to make a left turn onto Central. Contact: Robert Sanchez 505-927-2027.
Canyon Rd, 5th Street, 6th Street Conduit/Fiber Installation -Road and Sidewalk Closures
Sons Communications continues installing new conduit and fiber Tuesday through Friday, which includes closing the entrance from Canyon Rd at 5th Street and working their way down the west side of 5th Street to the north side of Kiva, then down the east side of 6th Street and ending with an underground bore across 6th Street to the west side. Crews will begin each day at 8:00 a.m. and end at 6:00 p.m. No work on Memorial Day. Contact Anita Morales 505-410-2384.
DP Rd (Work related to Canyon Walk Apts and The Bluffs – Bethel Development)
Qualcon Builders, LLC – 120 DP Road Utility Infrastructure Replacement and Roadway Reconstruction
No work on Memorial Day. Next week, roadway reconstruction activities will begin on Tuesday with roadway grading and curb & gutter construction. These activities will impact DP Road from Trinity Drive to Fire Station #2 with segments of the roadway restricted to one-lane traffic controlled by a flagged/signaled system. One-lane traffic restrictions will occur only during hours of construction potentially from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm daily. Access to businesses in this area will be maintained during these activities.
All construction activities related to the reconstruction of DP Road are currently expected to be substantially completed by the end of June. Please direct questions and concerns to the Public Works Liaison for this project: Keith Wilson, 505-231-3961.
