Road Construction Update:
Wk of May 24, 2021 

The projects listed in this section are being managed by County Public Works staff through contractors. Please note the below information is based on a schedule provided by the contractors and may change due to weather or other delays.  

Public Works Projects: 

Canyon Rim Trail Underpass 

Detour is active on NM502 which allows the contractor to work on the north side of the road installing precast concrete boxes.   

Due to the amount of construction activity that includes trenching, excavation and utility relocation near the trailhead, the trailhead parking lot, and a 100 ft. section of the trail near the trailhead will be closed for safety. AUI will be hauling excess material from project site to a site off DP Road. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.  

The project includes extension of the 10 ft. wide hard surface trail connecting the terminus of the Canyon Rim Trail and existing trailhead to Entrada Drive beneath NM 502 via a reinforced concrete box structure.  

ADA improvements along Trinity Drive from Oppenheimer to 39th Street 

Work continues on the east bound right shoulder on Trinity Drive starting at 35th Street, continuing east to Timber Ridge Rd.

Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.  Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic around the work zones. Access to residents and businesses as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone. 

North Mesa Roadway and Utilities Improvement Project (Casa de Oro)

TLC Plumbing and Utility continues road and utility improvements on Alamo Rd, Capulin Rd, Tsankawi St, Oro Ct, Tsankawi Ct, Cedro Ct, and Big Rock Loop South.  The contractor will be removing and replacing concrete sidewalks, driveway aprons and curb and gutter in selected area along Capulin Rd, Alamo Rd and Tsankawi Ct. Potholing will continue on Alamo Rd and Capulin Rd.   Utilities work will continue on Cedro Ct and Big Rock Loop South including the installation of new gas and water lines. There will be a short water outage for selected areas and all homes effected will be notified with door hangers with day and time. Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.  Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic around work zones. Access to residents as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, school bus routes, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Leisure Lagoon (addition to the Aquatic Ctr)

Canyon Road continues to be closed to thru traffic from 15th/Canyon to the Canyon/Central intersection through next week.  Klinger/TLC continues their waterline work for the new tie-in for the Leisure Lagoon adjacent to the project.  Access to the churches will be maintained.  The Aquatic Center will be closed Monday, May 24th for the entire day to allow the contra or to make the final connections for the Leisure Lagoon which also tie to the existing Aquatic Center.  The pool is scheduled to reopen Tuesday, May 25th.

Traffic & Streets Division Projects:

Countywide Road Striping

Crews continue their annual road striping project Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m to 3:30 p.m.

Sidewalk Repairs on Grand Canyon and Bryce Ave.

Crews will be replacing sections of sidewalk in various location along Grand Canyon and on Bryce Ave. starting Monday and continuing through Friday, beginning each day at 8:00 a.m. and ending by 3:30 p.m.

Non-County Projects:

The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed, but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slow down in work zones. Please direct questions or concerns to the project contact listed below:

West Road Construction (LANL):

Los Alamos National Laboratory is improving West Road, and construction activities will continue through September.  From May through August while shoulder and guardrail work are occurring, trucks are advised to use West Jemez and avoid West Road. During this time, one-lane access will be available to the County’s Ice Rink and the Camp May road turn-off. 

NM502 Roundabout Project (State DOT/Star Paving)

No change from last week; east bound traffic east of the roundabout is shifted to the north side of NM 502 and channeled back into the east bound lane in front of the Crossroads Church.

Canyon Rd is closed at First Street and the intersect of W. Manhattan Loop and Canyon Road.

Arroyo Lane is required to access NM 502 on the north side with east and west bound traffic.

The project is expected to wrap up in early July.

R and M Construction – 1010 Central Ave., Sidewalk Closure

Sidewalk access on the north side of Central Ave from 1000 Central Ave. to the entrance to the Bradbury Museum complex is closed to pedestrian traffic through May 30. Pedestrian traffic is detoured to the south side of Central Ave at Knecht Street and then detoured at the intersection of Central Ave and 15th to the north side of Central Ave. Contact: Robert Sanchez 505-927-2027.  

R and M Construction – 1010 Central Ave., Road Closure

In addition to the sidewalk closure, a road closure continues from the intersection of Central Ave. at Knecht St. Westbound traffic is detoured to Knecht St. to Trinity Drive. Northbound traffic on Knecht St. is unable to make a left turn onto Central. Contact: Robert Sanchez 505-927-2027.  

Sons Communications – Canyon Rd @ 5th Street with Road and Sidewalk Closures

Sons Communications will be installing a new conduit and fiber Monday through Friday. They will initially close the entrance from Canyon Rd at 5th Street and work their way down the west side of 5th Street to the north side of Kiva, then down the east side of 6th Street, ending with an underground bore across 6th Street to the west side. Crews will begin each day at 8:00 a.m. and end at 6:00 p.m.  

DP Rd (Work related to Canyon Walk Apts and The Bluffs – Bethel Development)

Qualcon Builders, LLC – 120 DP Road Utility Infrastructure Replacement and Roadway Reconstruction

Next week, roadway reconstruction activities may commence with roadway grading and curb & gutter construction, pending availability of work crews. These activities will impact DP Rd from Trinity Drive to Fire Station #2 with segments of the roadway restricted to one-lane traffic controlled by a flagged/signaled system.  One-lane traffic restrictions will occur only during hours of construction potentially from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm daily.  Access to businesses in this area will be maintained during these activities. Contact: Please direct questions and concerns to the Public Works Liaison for this project: Keith Wilson, 505-231-3961
