County: Cone Zone – Week Of May 17

Road Construction Update:

The projects listed in this section are being managed by County Public Works staff through contractors. Public Works Projects: 

Canyon Rim Trail Underpass 

On Monday, motorists can expect a detour on NM502 to allow the contractor to work on the north side of the road. 

Due to the amount of construction activity that includes trenching, excavation and utility relocation near the trailhead, the trailhead parking lot, and a 100 ft. section of the trail near the trailhead will be closed for safety. AUI will be hauling excess material from project site to a site off DP Road. They will be using end dump trucks to haul excess material.  Traffic signs and devices will be installed. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.

The project includes extension of the 10 ft. wide hard surface trail connecting the terminus of the Canyon Rim Trail and existing trailhead to Entrada Drive beneath NM 502 via a reinforced concrete box structure.  

ADA improvements along Trinity Drive from Oppenheimer to 39th Street 

Work continues on the eastbound right shoulder on Trinity Drive starting at 35th Street, continuing east to Canyon View.

Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.  Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic around the work zones. Access to residents and businesses as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone. 

North Mesa Roadway and Utilities Improvement Project (Casa de Oro)

TLC Plumbing and Utility continues road and utility improvements on Alamo Rd, Capulin Rd, Tsankawi St, Oro Ct, Tsankawi Ct, Cedro Ct, and Big Rock Loop South.  The contractor continues construction staking and potholing in this area as needed. Beginning the week of May 17, trenching will begin on Cedro Ct and a section of Big Rock Loop, south of San Ildefonso Road, to relocate utilities ahead of the road rehabilitation project.  Coordination with affected property owners on Cedro Ct and Big Rock Loop has been arranged.  Some traffic delays are anticipated on San Ildefonso in the area due to the transportation of materials and equipment.  Work Hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.  Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic around work zones. Access to residents as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, school bus routes, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.

Leisure Lagoon (addition to the Aquatic Ctr.)

Canyon Road will continue to be closed to thru traffic from 15th/Canyon to the Canyon/Central intersection through next week.  Klinger/TLC continues their waterline work for the new tie-in for the Leisure Lagoon adjacent to the project.  Access to the churches will be maintained. 

Traffic & Streets Division Projects:

Asphalt Repairs

Beginning Monday, crews will be repairing sections of asphalt near 39th Street on Trinity Drive, 6th and Kiva, and at Loma Vista and Oppenheimer . There will be a flagging operation in place. Crews will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end daily by 3:30 p.m.

Countywide Road Striping

Crews will be starting their annual road striping project in various locations across the County. Work hours are Monday through Friday beginning at 8:30 a.m and finishing by 3:30 p.m.

Meadow Lane Crack and Fog Seal Project

Traffic & Streets Division and GM Emulsion crews will be performing pavement preservation along Meadow Lane beginning on Monday at 8:00 a.m. and working until 5:00 p.m. Work is expected to wrap up by May 24th. There will be a moving flagging operation as the crews progress down Meadow Lane.

Non-County Projects:

The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed, but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slow down in work zones. Please direct questions or concerns to the project contact listed below:

NM502 Roundabout Project 

Eastbound NM502 traffic has been moved onto the eastbound segment of NM502.Westbound NM502 traffic remains in the current traffic lanes being used.

Residents exiting and entering Arroyo Lane are advised to exercise caution crossing the eastbound lane to access westbound NM502. Motorists are advised to pay attention to traffic control signage that is in place.

R and M Construction – 1010 Central Ave., Sidewalk Closure

Sidewalk access on the north side of Central Ave from 1000 Central Ave. to the entrance to the Bradbury Museum complex is closed to pedestrian traffic through May 30. Pedestrian traffic is detoured to the south side of Central Ave at Knecht Street and then detoured at the intersection of Central Ave and 15th to the north side of Central Ave. Contact: Robert Sanchez 505-927-2027.  

R and M Construction – 1010 Central Ave., Road Closure

In addition to the sidewalk closure, there will be a road closure from the intersection of Central Ave. at Knecht St. Westbound traffic will be detoured to Knecht St. then to Trinity Drive. Northbound traffic on Knecht St. will be unable to make a left turn onto Central. Sidewalk access on the north side of Central from 1000 Central Ave. to the entrance to the Bradbury Museum complex will be closed to pedestrian traffic starting Monday and will continue through May 28th. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the south side of Central Ave at Knecht Street.  Pedestrian traffic will then be detoured at the intersection of Central Ave and 15th to the north side of Central Ave. Contact: Robert Sanchez 505-927-2027.  

Marcon Excavating – Arkansas Ave Road Utility Infrastructure Replacement

Work on Arkansas Ave between Diamond Dr. and 41st Street should wrap up on Monday. Crews have been replacing existing water and sewer lines and connect to County infrastructure for Arkansas Place and the new townhomes being constructed. Contact: Kris Luster 505-690-0587.

Qualcon Builders, LLC – 120 DP Road Utility Infrastructure Replacement and Roadway Reconstruction

Next week, roadway reconstruction activities will commence with roadway grading and curb & gutter construction.  These activities will impact DP Road from Trinity Drive to Fire Station #2 with segments of the roadway restricted to one-lane traffic controlled by a flagged/signaled system.  One-lane traffic restrictions will occur only during hours of construction potentially from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm daily.  Access to businesses in this area will be maintained during these activities. 

The contractor is working in the right-of-way to replace existing utilities with upgraded services related to the new Canyon Walk Apartments (under construction) and The Bluffs senior housing (soon to be constructed). The roadway reconstruction includes installation of curb and gutter, sidewalks and paving of the roadway.  All construction activities related to the reconstruction of DP Road are currently expected to be substantially completed by the end of May.
