Road Construction Update:
The projects listed in this section are being managed by County Public Works staff through contractors. Public Works Projects:
Canyon Rim Trail Underpass
AUI, Inc. of Albuquerque will continue work to construct the Canyon Rim Trail Underpass. The project includes extension of the 10 ft. wide hard surface trail connecting the terminus of the Canyon Rim Trail and existing trailhead to Entrada Drive beneath NM 502 via a reinforced concrete box structure.
Due to the amount of construction activity that includes trenching, excavation and utility relocation near the trailhead, the trailhead parking lot and a 100 ft. section of the trail near the trailhead will be closed for safety. During this week’s construction, crews will be working off the shoulder of NM502 excavating for the underpass, but no vehicular travel lanes will be impacted at this time. AUI will be hauling excess material from project site to a site off DP Road. They will be using end dump trucks to haul excess material. Traffic signs and devices will be installed. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.
ADA improvements along Trinity Drive from Oppenheimer to 39th Street
Beginning Monday, crews with GM Emulsion will restart construction of pedestrian and ADA improvements along Trinity Drive from Oppenheimer to 39th Street. Late last year, crews completed similar work on the north side of this segment of Trinity Drive. Comparable improvements are now scheduled for the southern side which include replacement of damaged curb, gutter, and sidewalks.
Work is scheduled 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.
Traffic signs and devices will be installed to shift vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic around the work zones. Access to residents and businesses as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.
Barranca Mesa – Warranty Work
TLC Plumbing and Utility will conduct construction activities beginning this Wednesday and continuing through Wednesday, April 21. Contractor will be working on Tecolote and Camino Encantado.
The contractor will coordinate with residents when removal of vehicles from their street will need to take place. Work hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Services such as mail delivery, trash and recycling collection and emergency services will be maintained.
Leisure Lagoon (NEW Council approved name for the formerly titled Kiddie Pool/ Multi-Generational Pool) Construction at the Aquatic Center
CGI will be hauling excess material from the project site to a site off DP Road. The shoulder is closed on the north side of Canyon Rd next to the Aquatic Center. In addition, the sidewalk next to the Nature Center is closed on the north side of Canyon Road. These closures are expected to continue throughout construction, until the completion of the project in early 2022.
Traffic & Streets Division Projects:

86 Mesa Verde Rd.
Crews will be installing a concrete collar around a manhole on Mesa Verde Rd. They will be using a flagging operation Monday through Friday, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 3:30 p.m. each day.
Rover Blvd. at Meadow Ln. Intersection
Crews will be installing an ADA Ramp by Los Alamos National Bank. Crews will divert southbound vehicle traffic to the median along Rover Blvd. Pedestrian traffic will be diverted to the East side of Rover Blvd. at the intersection of NM 4 and Rover. Pedestrian traffic will also be diverted to the East side of Rover at Longview. Project hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Central Ave. at 15th Street – Traffic Signal replacement
Beginning Monday, crews will be replacing traffic signal heads at all four locations within the intersection of Central Ave. and 15th St. Crews will close the turn lane to access the signals as they move through each location. This work will continue through Friday, April 16th.
Canyon Rd and Central Ave. Pavement Preservation
The Traffic & Streets Division crews continue with Pavement Preservation along Canyon Road, from 15th Street to Diamond Drive and Central Avenue from Oppenheimer to Canyon Road. Work will continue through April 21st. Work hours will be 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This work will occur on days when the weather and temperature are favorable. A flagging operation will be used.
Dept. of Public Utilities Projects:

Planned Asphalt and Concrete Repairs – Various locations
GM Emulsion crews will continue repairs to emergency utility asphalt and concrete cuts that occurred during the winter. Crews will rotate to various locations throughout the Los Alamos and White Rock neighborhoods throughout the month of April. Some minor traffic delays are expected.
Traffic control equipment, such as signage, barrels and barricades will be erected around the work zones. Flagging operations may be deployed to assist with traffic flow. Crews will begin at 8:00 a.m. and work until 5:00 p.m. Most locations slated for repairs are on residential streets and should not take more than two to three days. Traffic impacts should be minimal. Motorists are advised to use caution and pay close attention to signage around the work zone.
Non-County Projects:
The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed, but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slow down in work zones. Please direct questions or concerns to the project contact listed below:
NM502 Roundabout Project
East bound traffic east of the Round-About has been shifted to the north side of NM 502 and channeled back into the east bound lane in front of the Crossroads Church, to allow crews to demo and build the remaining south side of NM 502. The traveling public is advised to exercise caution while traveling through this area.
Canyon Road will be closed at First Street and the intersect of W. Manhattan Loop and Canyon Road. Access to the affected residence will be accommodated accordingly. This closure is necessary to demo and build the new alignments of Canyon Road and Manhattan Loop.
Arroyo Lane will be required to access NM 502 on the north side with east and west bound traffic. A STOP sign will be in place at that junction with NM 502. Those motorists are encouraged to pay attention to the traffic control signage.
Motorists are reminded the posted speed limit through the project is 25 MPH.
R and M Construction – 1010 Central Ave., Sidewalk Closure
Sidewalk access on the north side of Central Ave from 1000 Central Ave. to the entrance to the Bradbury Museum complex is closed to pedestrian traffic. The closure will continue through April 30. Pedestrian traffic is being detoured to the south side of Central Ave at Knecht Street. Pedestrian traffic will next be detoured at the intersection of Central Ave and 15th to the north side of Central Ave. Contact: Robert Sanchez 505-927-2027.
Marcon Excavating – Arkansas Ave Road Utility Infrastructure Replacement
Arkansas Ave between Diamond Drive and 41st Street continues to be closed to through traffic until May 17 while crews replace existing water and sewer lines and connect to County infrastructure for Arkansas Place and the new townhomes being constructed. Contact: Kris Luster 505-690-0587.
DP Rd (Work related to Canyon Walk Apts and The Bluffs – Bethel Development)
Qualcon Builders, LLC – 120 DP Road Utility Infrastructure Replacement and Roadway Reconstruction
Next week, trenching activities for the storm drain installation will impact the segment of DP Road east of the Canyon Rim Trail crossing to Fire Station #2 with the roadway restricted to one-lane traffic controlled by a flagged/signaled system. One-lane traffic restrictions will occur only during hours of construction potentially from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm daily. Access to businesses in this area will be maintained during these activities.
The contractor is working in the right-of-way to replace existing utilities with upgraded services related to the new Canyon Walk Apartments (under construction) and The Bluffs senior housing (soon to be constructed). After completion of the storm drain work, the roadway reconstruction, including installation of curb and gutter, and sidewalks will begin with the final paving being the last activity. All construction activities related to the reconstruction of DP Road are currently expected to be substantially completed by the end of April.
