LAHS Student Council Wins A First Place At State Conference

LAHS NEWS

Twenty Los Alamos High School Student Council members and their sponsors leaned into learning about leadership this long weekend at their virtual State Student Council conference.

At Voyage to Leadership!, they spent three days listening to presenters, networking, and getting inspired with 52 other Student Councils from around New Mexico.www.nmasc.org.  Although they were not physically together, they stayed connected throughout the three days, joining numerous zoom meetings, messaging their favorite new ideas to each other, and having a collective celebration when they won!

Our Topper StuCo brought home 1st place Judges Choice award for Spirit!
It took the teamwork of many StuCo members to complete the multiple spirit-filled activities that are included in their presentation.  Special thanks to Leeson Weaver, Student Body Secretary for putting everything together in this Prezi that earned them the award: https://prezi.com/p/t2x2o0itqq3h/topper-spirit-in-a-pandemic/

“It’s truly amazing that in the midst of a global pandemic and closed school buildings, that our amazing students won an award for keeping spirit at their school high. It says so much of our these students and their dedication to making LAHS the best it can be,” said Becca Jones, StuCo co-sponsor.

Student Council State competition takes place every February. Each Student Council submits their projects, scrapbook, and more to be evaluated by a panel of adult sponsor judges from all over New Mexico. Normally, over 1,000 high school students would come together to share ideas and compete for top honors.  This year’s virtual conference went on without a hitch and easily brought the students and their work together to be shared online.

“We never do any the things we do for awards or even high fives, we do it for our LAHS students and staff to feel part of our community.  So, this is just a huge cherry on top of a great team effort to make sure we felt Topper Pride this year, no matter what,” said Lynn Ovaska, StuCo co-sponsor. “Ms. Jones and I are so proud of them!”

Student Council is committed to making LAHS a better place for all Toppers through events like Homecoming and activities like food drive class competitions. It is an open club for any high school student to join that meets on Wednesdays. Toppers can find the google meet link is in the Topper Weekly Bulletin.
