GIRL SCOUT NEWS

Girl Scout Cookies sales start on Monday, Feb. 8. Due to the pandemic, sales will be a little different this year. Cookie sales will be mostly online; offering direct-to-you shipping, contactless delivery, and curbside-pick up. Girl Scouts won’t be out at Smith’s every weekend, but they will have drive-thru booths.

In addition to being a great source of tasty treats, the Girl Scout Cookie Program offers girls the chance to develop entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills. Girl Scouts set goals, make decisions, manage money, talk with customers, and learn about business ethics. Money that Girls Scouts earn in the cookie program goes to troops, service units, local Girl Scout camps, and Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails to support Girl Scout activities over the course of the year. Many troops also use cookie money to give back to the community. Troops in Los Alamos and White Rock have used last year’s cookie money to support Self Help, Inc., Los Alamos Adopt-A-Family, and Esperanza, a domestic violence shelter in Santa Fe. They have also used cookie money to clean up trash, advocate for energy and water saving practices in the schools and people’s homes, and cheer up senior citizens at Aspen Ridge, Sombrillo, and the Senior Centers with cards and ornaments for the holidays.

To find a Girl Scout selling cookies, ask friends in your neighborhood or at work- there are 100 Girl Scouts selling cookies in Los Alamos and White Rock. Individual Girl Scouts will post links on their personal social media and Troops will announce their digital and drive-thru sales on Keep it Local, Next Door, and other community social media platforms. Starting Monday, you can also Find Cookies at  https://www.nmgirlscouts.org/en/cookies/find-cookies.html
