Governor, Office Of African Affairs Celebrate Black History Month

The New Mexico Office of African American Affairs on Monday announced that it will be hosting a four-part virtual series in honor of Black History Month, highlighting New Mexico through a Black lens with “A Celebration of Our Culture: Black History Today.” Community organizations from around the state will be hosting events and initiatives throughout the month in celebration of Black History Month. Additional details and event information can be found on the Office of African American Affairs website and on the office’s social media.

“New Mexico is proud to recognize February as Black History Month, celebrating and honoring the rich history of New Mexico’s African-American community,” said Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. “I strive every day to lead an administration that values and prioritizes racial equity in a multicultural New Mexico and works to move the state forward to create a safer and more prosperous future for every New Mexican. I join the Office of African American Affairs in celebrating Black History Month and invite all New Mexicans to learn about the history and contributions of African Americans throughout our state.”“Black History Month is a time to reflect, honor, and celebrate the individuals who have worked diligently for the freedoms of African Americans,” said Office of African American Affairs director Amy Whitfield. “New Mexico has a unique perspective to share, and we are proud honor those in our state who have participated in this work. As we continue to fight for equity for African Americans throughout New Mexico, we must recognize the hard work, dedication, and tenacity of those who came before us.”
