House Resolution 1, a radical Democrat-led package of rule changes to the operations of the New Mexico House of Representatives was approved following several hours of debate.
“Today is a sad day for New Mexico and for transparency and open access to our government,” said House Republican Leader Jim Townsend (Artesia). “What the Democrats did today was not simply silencing their political opposition in the House with their rule changes, they silenced the very people we were elected to represent. “
House Republicans presented numerous transparency fixes to the rule changes that were designed to facilitate open-access during a time in which the Democrat-majority has blocked public entry into the state’s Capitol. Republican lawmakers did succeed in minor transparency changes, and did receive bipartisan support on several amendments that were blocked by the progressive wing of the chamber.
