On Friday afternoon, September 25, in an outdoor event, the three winners of the 2020 Los Alamos Paint Out received their awards and prizes.
The Best of Show honor went to Madina Croce of Santa Fe for a stunning oil painting entitled “Looking Over the Rio Grande.” Albuquerque’s Pat Leister garnered 2nd place, with her watercolor, “White Rock Trail View.” Third prize went to Santa Fe’s Elizabeth Cooper for her pastel “This One’s for Joe.”
These paintings and 63 others from the Paint Out are currently showing and available for purchase at Fuller Lodge Art Center, 2132 Central Ave., Los Alamos, Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Oct. 16.
The event was sponsored jointly by Plein Air Painters of New Mexico (PAPNM) and Los Alamos Arts Council. This is the second plein air event of this nature. The first was the 2018 Los Alamos Paint Out, co-sponsored by Fuller Lodge Art Center and PAPNM. A third event in 2022 cosponsored by PAPNM and Los Alamos Arts Council is already in the planning stage.
The Los Alamos Paint Out is a painting contest for members of PAPNM. Contestants must start with blank canvases or papers that are officially stamped on the back. Artists then go to locales within defined borders surrounding the Los Alamos area to catch the true light and colors of New Mexico’s landscape from dawn till dusk for two and a half days. Participants choose their best two entries, frame them and present them to PAPNM officials for judging.
This year’s judge was Jane Chapin, who is an accomplished, internationally-known artist from Pecos. Jane also led a one-day workshop on Fuller Lodge lawn on professional aspects of plein air painting on September 25.
If you are unable to see the show in person at Fuller Lodge Art Center, painting images may be viewed on PAPNM’s website https://papnm.org and can be viewed and purchased on FLAC’s online art marketplace at https://www.artfullexhibits.com .
