COUNTY NEWS

Los Alamos County Traffic and Streets Crews, working in conjunction with Los Alamos Police Department officers, will assist in the transport of two over-sized units through Los Alamos on Wednesday at different times during the day.

First, during early morning hours and ahead of the morning commute peak travel time, a large crane will enter Los Alamos from NM502 and travel westbound on Trinity to Diamond Drive, then to Sullivan Field. Travel should occur prior to the start of the work day on the NM502 Roundabout and Trinity Drive construction improvements. LAPD officers will close Main Hill Road (NM502) at the bottom to escort this large trailer into the townsite.

Next, an oversized trailer with the new press box for the Sullivan Field fieldhouse will travel west on the Truck Route, across LA Canyon Bridge (aka Omega Bridge), onto Diamond Drive and to Sullivan Field parking lot. LAPD officers will be escorting this slow-moving vehicle into town for safe passage. Travel for the press box is expected to range from late morning to early afternoon.

The crane will be used to set the press box into place at Sullivan Field, and then LAPD officers will assist the crane operator in exiting Los Alamos along the same route – Trinity Drive eastbound out of town using NM502 – after the evening commute ends.

Because of the size and weight of the crane, the operator cannot use the Truck Route because the weight load exceeds the capacity of the bridge.

Motorists should avoid traveling on Trinity and may experience significant delays before 6:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. on NM502 for this slow-moving crane transport, especially in the construction area of NM502 and the roundabout. Crews are coordinating with the State DOT and Star Paving to safely navigate that portion of the travel route on the eastern edge of Los Alamos.
