UNM-LA NEWS

UNM-Los Alamos continues to welcome new students for Fall classes, which begin August 17. Financial aid and scholarship opportunities are still available for incoming students.

This fall, the campus will be offering a variety of class modalities for Fall semester. Due to the pandemic, the majority of classes will be online, with a few classes that require hands-on instruction offered as face-to-face or through a hybrid approach (combination of online and face to face).

A new scholarship program has been developed to encourage first time students to start at UNM-LA, recognizing that many students have had plans disrupted for moving away, living in dorms, and attending a residential college.

The UNM-LA Start Here Scholarship is open to incoming first-time students to provide financial assistance with educational costs for the 2020-2021 school year. Recent high school graduates and returning adult learners can apply for this $500 scholarship, which will be applied towards 2020-2021 educational expenses including tuition and fees, books, course materials, or technology.

Kathryn Vigil, Director of Student Affairs said, “We are seeing students who intended to study at universities across the country but have made the decision to start at UNM-LA and benefit from our quality instruction and individualized support. We created the Start Here Scholarship to offer an additional incentive to stay at home and choose UNM-LA during these stressful times.”

Last year, UNM-Los Alamos introduced the High Achiever Scholarship of $1,000 for incoming students with a GPA of 3.75 or higher. The High Achiever Scholarship gives financial assistance to students enrolled in an Associate of Science Degree in Computer Science, Education, Emergency Medical Services, Environmental Science, Pre-Professional Health Sciences, Pre-Engineering, Science, or an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Information Technology with Cybersecurity at UNM-Los Alamos.

New Mexico resident students attending UNM-LA can also apply for the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship, which provides tuition and fee assistance for qualified recent high school graduates and returning adult learners. Qualifying applicants must also must be enrolled full-time (at least 12 credits) in 2-year programs, including credit-bearing certificate or associate degree. The amount of the award varies, and is applied towards tuition, fees and books.

“Because our tuition is affordable,” continued Vigil, “With financial aid and scholarships available, many students can attend with minimal out-of-pocket tuition cost.”
