LAPS NEWS
Los Alamos Public Schools is excited to announce the opportunity for students to participate in fully remote learning in grades K-12 starting in August 2020.
LAPS Online Learning includes students:
- Participating in high quality instruction with individualized assignments and feedback
- Working on projects and participating in online teams
- Engaging in self-directed work and active learning based upon best practices from the learning sciences
LAPS has had limited online options available for students in grades 7-12 for several years. We have learned that the flexibility and safety of this option has benefits for many families. Thus, for this school year, LAPS is looking forward to expanding the online option for all students. The class size will be similar to in-person classes, and students will participate in activities through fully remote contact with an experienced, certified teacher. Students will receive instruction virtually with assignments completed at home and online. Assignments will be graded and teachers will evaluate work to monitor progress and adjust instruction. Teachers will provide feedback to students and parents to ensure grade level and course standards are mastered. Teachers will also provide opportunities for students to connect to their classmates and actively participate in team projects. Online learning will provide an interactive learning experience with local highly qualified teachers, school counselors, and specialists.
Students in Kindergarten through 8th grade will be assigned to a teacher, or teachers, who specialize in their grade level and content. Parents and students will access learning through a common platform that allows them access to instruction, check grades, ask questions, and complete assignments. We will provide parents and students with a clear sequence for instruction and outline of grade level standards. Coursework for grades 9-12 will be available based on credits needed to fulfill requirements for graduation. The high school will use accredited online courses to provide instruction as well as assigning students to teachers from LAPS who are skilled in remote teaching.
All Los Alamos County residents are welcome to apply. Click here to sign up for LAPS Online Learning.
LAPS will provide a Chromebook for every student. Families who choose the fully remote option must have reliable and high-bandwidth Internet access. Students should expect to spend time interacting with their teacher daily in a virtual classroom and complete assignments and projects independently each week. LAPS will provide training and technical support for all families on the technology and platforms as well as having a helpline available for support.
Based on recent questions about the remote option and hybrid learning, LAPS has prepared answers and organized the information into a categorized Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document. Click here to see the FAQ. Additional questions can be sent to: LAPSoptions@laschools.net.
The FAQ provides guidance and information about questions from staff, students and parents. The document will be regularly updated as new information comes in.
“This is a great step forward for LAPS and especially for our students,” said Superintendent Kurt Steinhaus. “We are working with principals and staff on how to make this work for everyone involved.”
