The Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration’s Los Alamos Field Office (DOE/NNSA) has issued a Floodplain Assessment for the New Mexico State Road 4 and East Jemez Road Intersection at Los Alamos National Laboratory (Floodplain Assessment) for a 15-day public review and comment period commencing with publication of this notice.

DOE/NNSA is proposing to modify and upgrade the intersection of New Mexico State Road 4 (NM 4) and East Jemez Road. The purpose of the proposed modifications and upgrades is to improve safety and increase the capacity and efficiency of the intersection. Road and intersection upgrades will add extra lanes to both NM 4 and East Jemez Road in the vicinity of the intersection and will require widening both roads.

Widening East Jemez Road will encroach on the 100-year lower Sandia Canyon floodplain. After the close of the public comment period and prior to issuing a Floodplain Statement of Findings DOE/NNSA will reevaluate the alternatives to locating the proposed action in a floodplain, identify mitigation measures that would avoid or minimize impacts to the floodplain and take into account all substantive comments received during the public comment period.
