Los Alamos Young Guns Take Third In State High School Trap Shooting For 2019-2020 Season

The New Mexico High School Clay Target Association 2019-2020 season has closed. COVID-19 concerns caused the season to be shortened by two events. High overall average is calculated using the three best scores, however this year some athletes did not have three scores by the time things shut down. It should be noted that these athletes competed with athletes from all over the state of New Mexico.

Even with all the disruption, the Los Alamos Young Guns achieved 3rd Place High Overall team in the state.

State High Overall Varsity Female:
Chantry Stermer – 1st place
Alyssa Vigil – 8th place
Sarah Randall – 10th place
Monica Smith – 14th place
Brooke Trujillo – 16th place

State High Overall Intermediate Female:
Maria Lucero, 2nd place, only two targets behind 1st place
Isabel Robles, 7th place, only two scores and still took 7th

State High Overall Varsity Male:
Gavin Robles, 11th place
Sam Bond, 30th place, with only two scores
Andres Chacon, 31st place

The following is the breakdown of the scores and placing of the Los Alamos Young Guns shooters in the competitions which were used to calculate the State high overall results.

RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE – FARMINGTON
The first competition, the Rumble in the Jungle, was held at the San Juan Wildlife Federation Ranges in in Farmington. The Los Alamos Young Guns team was able to earn a team score of 1,163 broken targets by fielding a five-person squad which earned them third place in the competition.

Men’s Events:|
Singles – Gavin Robles, 8th
Singles – Cade Pimentel, 9th

Handicap – Sam Bond, 6th
Handicap – Cade Pimentel, tied for 8th place
Handicap – Gavin Robles took 9th place

Doubles – Sam Bond, 3rd
Doubles – Pimentel, 9th

Seniors Bond and Pimentel will be missed in the 2020-2021 season.

NEW MEXICO HIGH SCHOOL CLAY TARGET ASSOCIATION – RATON
The Los Alamos Young Guns team was unable to fill a five-person squad and had not team score.
Gavin Robles earned 9th place for singles, 11th place in handicap and 16th place in doubles.

The Los Alamos Young Guns fielded a full varsity squad and had a third place team finish.

*Sam Bond’s two doubles scores were better than some athletes’ three scores and were counted in the end of the year high overall score which earned the team third place.

Doubles – Maria Lucero, 2rd, just two targets below 1st place.

RIO GRANDE GRAND – ALBUQUERQUE

Los Alamos Young Guns had their best team performance of the year at this competition finishing in second place.
