Qualifying residents urged to observe social distancing when retrieving food boxes due to Department of Health public emergency order regarding mass gatherings
Los Alamos County Social Services Manager Donna Casados announced today that food boxes will be available for pick up for a special segment of the County’s population on Friday, May 8 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center’s upper parking lot, from noon to 4 p.m. or until supplies last.
The food boxes are for low-income seniors, adults with disabilities and grandparents raising grandchildren.
“We’re grateful for this support being provided by the State of New Mexico and their Aging and Long-Term Services Department,” said Casados, adding that volunteers handing out the boxes as individuals drive up to the pick-up point will be taking appropriate precautions, including face masks and gloves, as well as frequent use of hand sanitizer.
Individuals will be asked a series of eligibility questions upon arriving at the Senior Center but will remain in their vehicle. Casados said the volunteers have been screened for any symptoms or contact with others that might be indicative of COVID-19 for the past 14 days. Social distancing guidelines and all health precautions or protections will be in place to protect volunteers and individuals.
“This is a no-contact, drive-thru, grab-n-go grocery giveaway,” Casados said, “We encourage at-risk seniors and adults with disabilities to take advantage of this free service on Friday.”
Individuals with questions about the food boxes or eligibility may contact Casados at the Social Services office at (505) 662-8068. In addition, special arrangements may be possible for home delivery on Friday for those individuals unable to travel to the Betty Ehart Senior Center; contact the Senior Center directly at 662-8920 to request a food box home delivery.
