COUNTY NEWS
Even with the ongoing work restrictions, Engineering Division staff of the Los Alamos County Public Works Department continues with the development of capital projects.
“It is our intent to maintain operations to the best of our ability while taking necessary actions to minimize the spread of the virus and maintain the health of our employees,” said Eric Martinez, County Engineer, “Staff is maintaining social distancing by utilizing technology to its fullest by sharing and reviewing documents remotely and utilizing video and teleconferencing for design reviews, pre-bid and pre-proposal meetings, and bid openings. Support from Information Management and Procurement staff has given us the ability to maintain project schedules with only minimal impacts.”
The following is an update on the most notable projects in various stages of development managed by the department:
Ice Rink Improvements
The contract for construction services has been executed and crews from Contreras Construction have mobilized and are underway with demolition of the existing locker room building and restrooms. Substantial completion of the project is scheduled for October 31st.
Kiddie/Multigenerational Pool at the Aquatic Center
A design charrette between staff and the design team was held on March 24th via web conference. The commissioning agent also covered the commissioning process, along with a peer review of the design development drawings.
Design of the sewer and gas line relocation required for the new building footprint is complete in coordination with Public Utilities staff. Staff is awaiting a quote to perform the utility relocation in advance of building construction.
Piñon Park Splash Pad
Final design plans have been received and design review was held on April 10th via web conference. Upon addressing final review comments, design plans and construction documents will be finalized and advertised for construction bids.
Golf Course Improvements
Bids for irrigation system replacement were opened on March 24th with four bids received. Bid award was approved by Council on April 7th and execution of the construction services contract with Landscapes Unlimited is in process.
An RFP has been advertised for the design of additional golf course site development improvements including safety screening, bunker drainage, T-box and cart path rehabilitation, turf improvements to greens, and restroom and lighting shelter (way station) renovations. A pre-proposal meeting was held by teleconference on April 9th with a number of design professionals in attendance. Proposals are due on April 30th.
Golf Course Clubhouse Patio Enclosure
Additional design effort to improve HVAC mechanical operations and building envelope is in progress. Preliminary design plans were submitted for County review on March 24th. Upon finalization of the design plans and construction documents, the project will be advertised for construction bids.
Canyon Rim Trail Underpass
NMDOT is reviewing certification documents submitted by staff associated with federal grant fund requirements. Once approved by NMDOT, a final plan review will be scheduled so that design plans and contract documents can finalized and proceed to bidding. Construction is anticipated to begin later in 2020.
Trinity Drive Pedestrian & ADA Improvements – Diamond to Oppenheimer
The County was awarded a $250,000 state grant for the repair and replacement of sidewalk, ADA ramps, curb and gutter along Trinity Drive. Design plans are being finalized in-house by staff; and construction is scheduled to begin soon, prior to a proposed mill and overlay by NMDOT.
Barranca Mesa Road Improvements
Design plans are being developed in-house by staff for road improvements to Camino Encantado, Escondido, Tecolote, Obsidian Loop, Encino, Kachina, and Turquoise. Geotechnical field investigations are complete with pavement analysis and design recommendations forthcoming so that design plans can be finalized and advertised for construction bids.
Wayfinding Signage Installation
An RFP for sign manufacturing and installation services to update community wayfinding signage has been advertised with a pre-proposal teleconference conducted on March 25th. Proposals are due April 23rd with evaluations and recommendation of award to follow.
