The University of New Mexico – Los Alamos (UNM-LA) Community Education will offer two financial planning classes for adults considering retirement. “It’s never too early to start planning for retirement,” said Community Education Program Coordinator Rose Nyenhuis. “UNM-LA has classes to help individuals prepare for success and avoid costly errors in retirement planning.”
- “Wise Social Security and Medicare Planning” will be held on Saturday, March 14, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
- “Passport to Retirement” will be held on Thursday, March 26, 6 – 8:30 p.m.
Social Security and Medicare are the largest benefit programs for the average retiree. The four-hour seminar “Wise Social Security and Medicare Planning” will cover the basics of Social Security and Medicare, and reveal strategies for maximizing benefits. Participants will discuss when to apply for benefits, when it makes sense to delay benefits, how to estimate benefits, how to minimize taxes on Social Security benefits, and how to coordinate Social Security with additional sources of retirement income. The cost for this class is $55 and includes materials.
“Passport to Retirement” will investigate how to gain control of finances in planning for a comfortable retirement. Attendees will review wise money management; then discuss how to develop an investment strategy, to prepare for the unexpected, and to consider lifestyle issues, Social Security, and retirement plans. This class provides the basic financial tools necessary to meet financial life goals. Students will receive a 145-page retirement guide filled with helpful checklists, self-analysis quizzes, and worksheets. The $45 cost for this class includes materials.
Peter Murphy, a Certified Financial Planner™, will teach both classes. Murphy specializes in educating the Santa Fe and Los Alamos communities in Social Security, Medicare, Financial Literacy, and Retirement Income Planning.
