Explore supernovas this Friday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Los Alamos Nature Center’s planetarium. Astronomer Rick Wallace will investigate these incredible stellar explosions during this talk. These amazing stellar destruction events form some of the strangest objects in the Universe like neutron stars and black holes. Supernovas also seed the surrounding space with the materials needed to form new stars, planets and life itself. Wallace will discuss how we are all made from stardust and originated in supernovas and how three supernovas may have had a hand in forming our own solar system.
In addition to this talk, PEEC will play the full-dome film “Exploding Universe” in the planetarium on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. This film explores a world where supernovas erupt, massive materials collide and protons give birth to life as we know it today. This show brings to life all that is fascinating and extreme in the progression of the Universe.
Admission to Friday night’s talk and Saturday’s film is $6 for adults and $4 for children. Events in the planetarium are not recommended for kids under age 4.
If you are interested in additional events in the planetarium, stop by the nature center on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. Every week, a member of the Pajarito Environmental Education Center’s astronomy team hosts a free 15-minute sky show and then takes audience questions and requests.
