$6,000 Grant From N3B Brings Matheatre Performances To Northern New Mexico

The Bradbury Science Museum Association will bring Matheatre, a musical troupe, to Northern New Mexico starting Feb. 27 in Taos. The group performs Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) based theatrical renditions.

“This math-theater is an amazing blend of science and art. We are thrilled to be able to offer these free performances around northern New Mexico, thanks to funding from N3B,” said Ryn Herrmann, president of the BSMA, a non-profit that supports STEM education outreach in N. New Mexico.

The group will perform “Curie Me Away,” an original musical based on Marie Curie, a physicist and the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physics.

“Marie Curie was a genius, but her superpower was persistence,” said Sadie Bowman, founder and co-artistic director of Matheatre. “We hope current and future scientists will be inspired by the true story of a woman who pursued education as an act of resistance, and in the process fundamentally altered our understanding of the universe.”

The adaptations also include historically based narrative and original songs on core chemistry concepts.

Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B), a Los Alamos National Laboratory contractor, provided over $6,000 to the BSMA, as part of its commitment to support STEMeducation initiatives in N. New Mexico.

“N3B is committed to providing innovative and creative opportunities to engage Northern New Mexico students in learning, especially in subjects related to science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The Matheatre program does that, and we’re pleased to be able to help make it possible,” said Frazer Lockhart, Regulatory & Stakeholder Interface Program Manager at Newport News Nuclear BWXT-Los Alamos (N3B).

All performances are free to the public. The performances are:

  • Thursday, February 27, 10:00 a.m. at Taos Community Auditorium, 145 Taos Del Pueblo Norte, Taos
  • Friday, February 28, 6:00 p.m. at Fuller Lodge, 2132 Central Avenue, Los Alamos
  • Saturday, Feb 29 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Moving Arts, 368 Eagle Drive, Ohkay Owingeh, Espanola. At Moving Arts, a free dinner will be provided to performance attendees with support from Help New Mexico and Central New Mexico Community College culinary team.
