Collections manager Lynda Romero of the Poeh Cultural Center and Museum in
Pojoaque spoke Tuesday, Jan. 29 at the Rotary Club of Los Alamos. Romero
explained the process of developing, curating, and exhibiting “Di Wae Powa:
The Return of Historic Pueblo Pottery” which opened in mid-October. The
exhibit of Pueblo pottery represents a collaboration between the Poeh and
the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), an affiliate of the
Smithsonian Institution.
The pieces, dating from approximately 1850-1930, were primarily made for
utilitarian use. None of the 100 pots on exhibit, chosen from a group of
300 by tribal leaders and elders, is culturally sensitive or ceremonial.
The pieces are on long-term loan and will remain at the Poeh for as long as
the museum is able to care for them according to NMAI protocols.
The Poeh is located directly next to La Mesita Restaurant in Pojoaque at 78
Cities of Gold Road along US 84/285. For information, please go to
www.poehcenter.org or call (505) 455-5041.”
