State Fishing Report: Week Of Jan. 15

Catches of the week

Chama River: Thomas Vigil of Espanola caught and released a 21-inch rainbow trout using a small jerk bait below Abiquiu Dam Jan. 7.

Red River: Pearl Yeager of Des Montes caught a 21.5-inch rainbow trout using salmon eggs Jan. 11.

Storrie Lake: Estevan Alarcon caught two 18-inch rainbow trout using worms Jan. 11.

The following report came in late, but is definitely worth mentioning:

Ruidoso River: Talia Jasso, age 20, of Las Cruces caught a 15-inch rainbow trout using a copper spinner Jan. 4.

Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron Monday morning was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Clayton Lake: The lake is closed to fishing and boating until March 1, 2020.

Conchas Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Costilla Creek: Stream flow near Costilla Monday was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: Open for ice fishing. Fishing for trout was good using bright colored PowerBait.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fawn Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake: The gate to the camping area is closed. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: Open for ice fishing. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya: Open to ice fishing. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Los Pinos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: The lake is closed to fishing and boating until March 1, 2020.

Monastery Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Morphy Lake: The lake is closed for a renovation project on the dam and no firm opening date has been set.

Pecos River: Stream flow near the town of Pecos Monday morning was 27.2 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery Monday morning was 47.8 cfs. Fishing for trout was fair to good using salmon eggs.

Rio Grande: Stream flow at the Taos Junction Bridge Monday morning was 435 cfs. Fishing upstream from Pilar was fair to good using PowerBait.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow Monday morning near Valdez was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Mora: Stream flow Monday morning was 4.39 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco Monday morning was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: Closed. Fishing is open on the Valle Vidal, including Shuree Ponds, July 1-Dec. 31.

Springer Lake: One angler reported that fishing for trout was very slow.

Storrie Lake: Fishing for trout was fair to good using worms.

Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. The water temperature was 43 degrees Fahrenheit.

Northwest Fishing Report

Abiquiu Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Due to low water levels anglers are advised to use four-wheel drive vehicles to launch boats and watch for obstructions on the water.

Animas River: Water flow below Aztec Monday morning was 206 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing for trout was fair to good using spinners and salmon eggs.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing for trout was fair. The winter trout stocking plan is to stock 6,000 catchable-size rainbow trout per month from November through March.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chama River: Monday morning flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 102 cfs and 76.7 cfs respectively. Fishing for brown trout below El Vado Lake was fair to good using nightcrawlers and flies. Fishing for trout below Abiquiu Lake was good using small jerk baits. Anglers should expect seasonal closures on the Rio Chama below Abiquiu Dam until March as a fish habitat improvement project is currently underway. Cochiti Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fenton Lake: The lake is closed due to dangerous ice conditions. When the lake opens to ice fishing, remember that only two cutthroat trout are allowed to be harvested per day within the regular five fish limit.

Heron Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near the town of Jemez Monday morning was 19.8 cfs. Fishing for trout was good above and below Jemez Springs using worms, salmon eggs and Copper John flies.

Laguna del Campo: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lagunitas Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

McGaffey Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Stream flow Monday morning was 462 cfs. Dry fly fishing for trout in the quality waters was fair to good using small midge and midge cluster patterns. Fishing for trout in the quality waters was good using red midge larva patterns, pupa patterns and egg patterns. Fishing for trout in the bait waters was fair to good using flies and salmon eggs. Water clarity was about one-foot visibility.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Tingley Beach: Fishing for trout was good using garlic-scented PowerBait, white PowerBait worms and homemade dough bait.

Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
