Perhaps, your New Year’s resolution has you moving more? On Fridays during January, Kate Ramsey, will teach Zumba. The class is experimental to gauge the interest in the program and the best time to offer a class. The class will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Betty Ehart Senior Center.

“I decided to try it when some people at my job were talking about it,” said Ramsey. “I went once and instantly fell in love, it was like being at a party! After being a student for five years and inspiration from the Los Alamos instructors, I decided to become an instructor too!”

Ramsey has been involved in dance and theater since grade school, holds a Master’s Degree in Communication and moved to Los Alamos in 2009. She has been a Zumba instructor for almost three years and has two children, a 6-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son, that keep her toes tapping.

The Zumba Gold class is geared toward seniors but all adults are welcome. Those that have never done the program are especially encouraged, to learn something new. A small donation and small investment of time, is all that’s requested to try. Ramsey warns you that it just might become a lifestyle and the fun will make you happy.

As an instructor, she tries to personalize the class to individuals and can even teach it from a seated position. Those willing to share ailments like joint problems or other conditions, will allow her to adapt movements to best fit the student.

“Zumba is not just for weight loss,” said Ramsay. “It changes your well-being, it changes you. I had one student who came to class for the first time. At the end of class, she came up to me and said, ‘that was like a therapy session!’ When class is over, people are smiling and laughing. They are happy, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen.
