The community is invited to the 2020 Legislative Preview in Fuller Lodge from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. , Wednesday, Jan. 8. Sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women, the event will be preceded by refreshments and conversation at 6:30 p.m.
Our legislators, Rep. Christine Chandler, Sen. Richard Martinez, and Sen. Roberto Gonzales (recently appointed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to replace the late Sen. Carlos Cisneros), are slated to their views on the upcoming session. In addition, Amber Wallin, Deputy Director of Voices for Children, will discuss tax reform and funding. All of the speakers will answer questions from the audience.
The 2020 New Mexico Legislative Session will begin in Santa Fe on Jan. 21 and continue for 30 days, ending on Feb. 20. Since it is a short session with legislation limited to budget matters, memorials, resolutions, issues receiving attention from the governor, and bills that were vetoed, there will be less action than in the 2019 session. However, crucial matters will be addressed.
In addition, on League Day, Feb. 6, in the Roundhouse, the state will celebrate the 100th birthday of both the League and the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote. You need not be a League member to participate. Visit the LWVNM website, www.lwvnm.org, for details.
