State Fishing Report: Week Of Dec. 17

This fishing report, provided by Dustin Berg of Go Unlimited (supporting disabled anglers) and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Catches of the week

Alto Lake: Briana Valdez, age 11, of Anthony caught a 16-inch rainbow trout using yellow PowerBait salmon eggs Dec. 14.

Bill Evans Lake: Ernest Almanza of Deming caught an 18-inch rainbow trout using cheese-flavored PowerBait Dec. 12.

Chama River: Adam Sena of Los Lunas caught a 26-inch, 7-pound rainbow trout using a custom-tied brown nymph below Abiquiu Lake Dec. 12. 

Cochiti Lake: Luke Grossetete and fishing partner Fisher Joe both of Albuquerque caught and released two limits of catfish using cut bait Dec. 14.

Northeast Fishing Report

Cabresto Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron Monday morning was 15.4 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Clayton Lake: The lake is closed to fishing and boating until March 1, 2020.

Conchas Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Costilla Creek: Stream flow near Costilla Monday was 7.5 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: The lake is closed to boating and ice fishing due to recent weather conditions that have produced unsafe lake conditions. The lake is currently closed to all watercraft including canoes, kayaks and inflatables as well as all types of motor boats. A layer of ice has formed over portions of the lake. These conditions prohibit boating or ice fishing activities. It is anticipated that ice conditions should improve soon. Park staff will continue monitoring ice conditions and will advise when the lake is safe for ice fishing. Fishing from the shore is only permitted where open water touches the shore.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fawn Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Los Pinos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Monastery Lake: Fishing for trout was good using gold beadhead black Woolly Bugger flies and small olive leech pattern flies. There was a thin layer of ice in the mornings that melted in the afternoons.

Morphy Lake: Closed for a renovation project on the dam and no firm opening date has been set.

Pecos River: Stream flow near the town of Pecos Monday morning was 28.8 cfs. Fishing for trout was good using worms and nymph flies.

Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery Monday morning was 41.4 cfs. Fishing for trout was good using flies and PowerBait.

Rio Grande: Stream flow at the Taos Junction Bridge Monday morning was 510 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow Monday morning near Valdez was 9.18 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Mora: Stream flow Monday morning was 5.41 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco Monday morning was undetermined due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week. Fishing is open on the Valle Vidal, including Shuree Ponds, July 1-Dec. 31.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake: Fishing for white bass was fair vertical jigging in 30 to 40 feet of water. We had no reports on other species. The main lake watercolor was lightly stained, and the water temperature was 45.

Northwest Fishing Report

Abiquiu Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Due to low water levels anglers are advised to use four-wheel drive vehicles to launch boats and watch for obstructions on the water.

Animas River: Water flow below Aztec Monday morning was 209 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing for trout was fair to good using salmon eggs and PowerBait.

Bluewater Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. The winter trout stocking plan is to stock 6,000 catchable size rainbow trout per month from November through March.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chama River: Monday morning flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 298 cfs and 305 cfs respectively. We had no reports this week from below El Vado Lake. Fishing for trout below Abiquiu Lake was good using brown and black gold beadhead nymphs, egg pattern flies, Woolly Buggers, salmon eggs and PowerBait.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing for catfish was good using cut bait.

El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fenton Lake: Anglers reported a thin layer of ice prohibiting fishing from the shore. The lake is closed to ice fishing until ice conditions improve. Remember that only 2 cutthroat trout are allowed to be harvested per day within the regular five fish limit.

Heron Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez near the town of Jemez Monday morning was 17.3 cfs. Fishing for trout below Battleship Rock was fair to good using worms.

Laguna del Campo: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lagunitas Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake: Fishing for trout was fair to good using corn-colored PowerBait and white PowerBait.

McGaffey Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Kokanee salmon snagging season is open from Oct. 1 – Dec. 31. We had no reports on other species.

San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Stream flow Monday morning was 577 cfs. Fishing for trout in the quality waters was fair to good using red midge larva pattern flies, princess nymph flies, white bunny leeches and size 24 gray adult midge pattern flies.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Tingley Beach: Fishing for trout was fair to good using garlic scented PowerBait and white PowerBait worms.

Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Alumni Pond: Fishing for trout was fair to good using mini marshmallows, garlic-favored PowerBait and cheese.

Bear Canyon Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage. It appears now that the lake will be out of commission until the spring of 2020.
