Southwestern College Art Therapy student Lauren Sherwood will host a special Art as Wellness event called Grief and the Holidays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Dec. 16 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center.

The event is free but small donations are appreciated to help students cover supplies. No experience is necessary and this special art project is designed to honor a memory or someone that has been lost. Those in attendance are welcome to bring in photos or other
personal items that they would like to use in a separate art project.

Sherwood has been working at the senior center during the last several months to help adults through the grieving process. The safe space is designed to allow individuals to focus on the grief that is relevant to them, including death, loss of a job, or another type of transition.

The purpose of Monday’s event is honor and create space for loss during the
holiday season, to form community with others going through similar situations, and to create new growth-minded memories.

“I have truly enjoyed working with seniors. I have seen wonderful growth in wellness in many of the people I have been working with during the past few months,” said Sherwood. “There is a desire to learn and grow and become something more.”
