Eight athletes on the Los Alamos Young Guns shotgun sports team traveled to Albuquerque for the Rio Grande Grand two-day trap shooting event Dec. 7-8.
The nine teams competing in the event were 4-P Trap Club from Melrose, Albuquerque Youth Trap Shooting, Aztec Tigers, Bootheel Shotgunners, Hatch Bears Longshots, Mesilla Valley, Sierra Blanca Shooters and the Los Alamos Young Guns.
A strong team effort by the varsity squad resulting in Los Alamos coming in second, beating the home team, Albuquerque, by five targets for the best showing by Los Alamos since 2015.
Intermediate team shooter Maria Lucero took third place in singles and second place in doubles, leaving her third in High Overall Intermediate Female.
Gavin Robles was fifth High Overall Senior Male, which he achieved by being fourth Senior Male Singles, 12th Senior Male Handicap and fifth Senior Male Doubless.
Senior females also had a strong showing with Chantry Stermer in first place High Overall Senior Female. Stermer scored higher than all senior shooters, male and female, by 17 targets.
Sarah Randall took fifth place High Overall Senior Female, Alyssa Vigil seventh place High Overall Senior Female and Monica Smith, 12th place High Overall Senior Female.
Contributions by Andres Chacon, Brooke Trujillo and Monica Smith helped the team to achieve the second place for Team High Overall. Monica Smith stepped up to shoot doubles on the Los Alamos first squad giving the team the necessary fifth score for the doubles event.
To be eligible for High Overall, an athlete must shoot all three events. For a team placement, five scores for all three events must be posted.
