PEEC NEWS
On Aug. 12 of this year, Margaret Burbidge celebrated her 100th birthday. She was a key member of the team Burbidge, Burbidge, Fowler and Hoyle (or BBFH, as it is called in astronomical literature). In 1957, the team first solved the mystery of how all the elements that make up our universe, our Earth and our own bodies are synthesized in the interiors of stars. Join Galen Gisler this Friday, Sept. 20 in the Los Alamos Nature Center’s planetarium to hear the story of the BBFH collaboration, how it built on earlier work and how their conclusions have been expanded since. This talk will begin at 7 p.m.
In addition to Gisler’s talk, the nature center will play the full-dome film “National Parks Adventure” on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. Narrated by Robert Redford, this documentary tours the awe-inspiring landscapes, historic sites and untamed wilderness of America’s great parks. This film was brought to Los Alamos by PEEC’s sponsors: CB Fox, Metzger’s Hardware and the Delle Foundation, with additional funding from the Manhattan Project National Historical Park.
Seating is limited for both of these events, so please call the nature center at 505-662-0460 or stop by to reserve your tickets. Admission to both programs is $6 for adults and $4 for children. Events in the planetarium are not recommended for children under age 4.
