Public Works/Traffic Division Projects Report For Week Of Aug. 19

Los Alamos County

COUNTY NEWS

Diamond Dr Paving

Star Paving is wrapping up manhole adjustments and will be pulling the steel plates located on Diamond Drive between the Omega Bridge and the Sandia/Orange Intersection by early next week, completing this road work in front of the high school.

Milling and paving operations from the Sandia/Orange intersection northbound continue during daytime hours Monday – Friday and may include Saturdays. Work in this area includes completion of manhole adjustments as well as applying striping and markings, which requires intermittent lane closures.

Striping and marking activities will take place daily as well as overnight to avoid impeding traffic as much as possible.  Motorists will continue to see daily lane drops for milling and paving operations in each direction as work advances past Sycamore and continues to proceed toward the golf course; allow extra time for delays, especially with schools back in session and early release times for the elementary schools occuring on Wednesdays, causing additional traffic congestion in these areas during the lunch hour.

During daytime hours Monday through Friday, crews continue working between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to accommodate peak commuter times for travel.

Final project completion is set for Sept. 27, weather permitting.

NM502 Roundabout and Road Reconstruction (NMDOT project)

Eastbound Detour CHANGE Begins Monday, Aug. 19 for NM502 Roundabout Project: Star Paving plans to close Trinity Drive between DP Road and Central Avenue beginning Monday, Aug. 19 for two weeks. This closure is needed to facilitate the crossing of water, sewer, gas and numerous electrical and communications conduits. Eastbound traffic will be detoured from Trinity Drive onto 15th Street and then onto Central Avenue.

Access to DP Road and all businesses on Trinity Drive between 15th Street and DP Road will be maintained throughout the closure. All traffic exiting DP Road will be required to turn left onto Trinity Drive and use the appropriate detour routes. Upon completion of the utility crossing, Eastbound traffic will return to the current detour which is 4th Street to Central Avenue and back onto Trinity Drive. Download a PDF of the map showing the detour here.

No change to westbound traffic; Westbound traffic will continue to use the current detour which is Central Avenue to Knecht Street.

Traffic advisories from NMDOT are available on www.nmroads.com and motorists are asked to check the site for updates on this project as it proceeds.

Sidewalk Closure: Canyon Road near NM502 Roundabout Project:

Megacomm Service LLC is finishing up their fiber project along the western side of Canyon Road between the intersection of NM502 and Canyon Road, near 4th Street and Canyon Road. Sidewalks continue to be closed; pedestrian traffic must divert to the east side of Canyon Road. Work should be completed by Tuesday, August 20, weather permitting.

TA-21 Clean Up Project – DP Road (N3B project):

No change in truck traffic on DP Road from last week’s report. Clean-up work on the LANL TA-21 Site at the far eastern end of DP Road continues. Large trucks carrying away demolition debris containers will be exiting DP Road at an average of approximately three trucks per day. Motorists are asked to be alert for trucks exiting; use caution when entering or exiting DP Road, as this area is near the NM502 Road Reconstruction project.

Advance Notice: Overnight Excavator Transport from DP Rd to Main Hill Rd (NM502) to Truck Rt to NM4 to Pajarito Rd – Move Set for Saturday, August 24

N3B will be transporting an excavator from TA-21 at the end of DP Rd to Trinity Drive, crossing Marimac Plaza’s parking lot to Central Avenue, then east down NM502 to the Truck Route, beginning at 6:00 a.m. Saturday, August 24. They will stop at the Truck Route Inspection Station for inspection, then resume transport after 8:00 a.m, traveling into White Rock on NM4 to Pajarito Road. LAPD officers will be assisting on site to close NM502 at the bottom of the Main Hill Rd during these morning hours to allow the excavator to move safely down the Main Hill Rd to NM4 and the Truck Route Inspection Station. Early morning traffic should expect delays on Main Hill Road and the Truck Route near the inspection station during this time frame of 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 24.

A second move of two excavators is expected to occur in a similar traffic pattern on Saturday, Sept. 7. Because two excavators are being moved, the closure time may be longer. More details will follow in a future Cone Zone update.
