Bandelier National Monument Announces Upcoming Guided Wilderness Hikes

Bandelier National Monument Wilderness Ranger Lori Young has released the list of guided wilderness hikes planned for the coming months. Registration and other requirements are at the end of the list.

Sat. July 20 – Frijolito to Rim Trail (5 miles roundtrip/1,200 ft. elevation change)
Lions, Sheep, and Bears… Learn what species call the monument home. Join Wilderness Ranger Lori, 10am @ Visitor Center

Sun. July 28 – Falls Trail (4 miles roundtrip)
Come learn about wilderness and the geology of the canyon as we hike to the beautiful Upper Frijoles Falls! Join Wilderness Ranger Lori at 11am @ Falls TH

Sat. August 3 – Cerro Grande Summit (4 miles roundtrip/1,200 ft. elevation gain)
Pikas are on the move on Cerro! Come listen for them and enjoy an overlook of the monument wilderness at the top. Join Wilderness Ranger Lori 9am @ Cerro Grande TH

Sun. August 11 – Frijoles Canyon Trail (6 miles roundtrip)
Join Wilderness Ranger Lori to discover the many health benefits of spending time in wilderness, 10am @ Visitor Center

Sat. August 24 – Ponderosa to Upper X (4 miles roundtrip/1,200 ft. elevation change)
Let’s talk wildfire ecology and how a habitat recovers as we meander into the canyon with Wilderness Ranger Lori, 10am @ Ponderosa CG

Sun. Oct 20 – Bandelier Wilderness Day: Falls Trail (4 miles roundtrip)
Celebrate 43 years of Wilderness at Bandelier and discover how designated wilderness became a part of the monument. Join Wilderness Ranger Lori on the anniversary of that designation in 1976! Meet @ 11am @ Falls TH

  • Reservations required – call the Bandelier Visitor Center (505) 672-3861, ext. 517
  • All mileage information is round trip
  • Participants must wear sturdy boots or hiking shoes and be in good physical condition to handle elevation gains in and out of the canyon. Bring a pack including 2-3 liters of water, multiple snacks/bars (in some cases a lunch), a rain jacket, sunscreen, hat, any necessary medications. Safety briefings will be given at the start of each hike.
