U.S. Forest Service-Santa Fe National Forest says the number of abandoned campfires down 64 percent from the 2018 Memorial Day weekend. SFNF staff found some 30 abandoned campfires over the three-day weekend mostly in the Pecos and Jemez Ranger Districts. Last Memorial Day weekend, 84 abandoned campfires were found. “While it was clear that campers had made an effort to put out some of those campfires, too many of them were literally just walked away from from campfires, which, with the weekend’s high winds, could have been disastrous,” an SFNF spokesman said.
