Acting Los Alamos Chief of Police Jason Herrera released crime statistics for the first quarter of 2019 which were compiled by the Records Section of the Los Alamos Police Department.

Offenses reported as crime statistics are determined by the FBI Uniform Crime Report Program and are classified as crimes against persons (violent crime) and crimes against property.

The offenses of murder (homicide), manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault make up the violent crime category. Simple assault is not included in UCR. The offenses of arson, burglary, larceny, and auto theft make up the property crime category. Both of these categories are referred to as Part I Offenses.

During the first quarter of 2019, officers responded to a total of 18 overall Part 1 Offense
complaints, which represents a 52.6% decrease as compared to 38 offenses in 2018. A total of 5 violent crime reports were taken in the first quarter of 2019, which represents a 16.7% decrease as compared to 6 in 2018. Property crime decreased to 13 in the first quarter of 2019, which represents a 59.4% decrease as compared to 32 in 2018.

While many factors can contribute to crime rates within a community, the Los Alamos Police Department would like to recognize and thank our community partners for sustaining a high quality of life by contributing to our low crime rate through the combined efforts of enforcement, education, prevention, and treatment. These efforts continue to be reflected in the fact that Los Alamos remains one of the safest communities in the nation.

The Los Alamos Police Department has recently seen an increase in reported fraud and attempted fraud. A recent scam where a criminal entity, claiming to be from the Los Alamos Sheriff’s Department, was attempting to have victims call and send money through the telephone. All calls from the Los Alamos Police Department go out from (505) 662-8226. Citizens should never send money to someone they do not know, and, if they are suspicious of any type of phone calls or activity, individuals can notify the Los Alamos Police Department by calling the non-emergency Dispatch at any time: (505) 662-8222. For more information on crime prevention, call Cmdr. Preston Ballew, 505-662-8236.
