Linhtet Htoon, a 6th grade student at Piñon Elementary School, won 1st place in the 6th grade category of the 2018-2019 UNM-PNM Statewide Mathematics Contest.
The goal of this contest is to promote mathematics education in New Mexico by rewarding students, teachers, and their schools for mathematics excellence. This year, over 1,000 students participated in UNM-PNM contest. They took part in two rounds of exams designed to test mathematical potential and ingenuity as well as their general math knowledge.
Htoon attended a banquet and award ceremony April 20 along with his teacher, Lana Martin, and his parents, Waimar Lwin and Han Htoon. The ceremony took place on the UNM campus in Albuquerque.
“As Linhtet’s sixth grade teacher, I witnessed his extraordinary math problem-solving abilities in class,” said Martin. “He completed an online Algebra course in March, impressing me with his endless curiosity and focus.”
