Join astronomer Rick Wallace on Friday, April 26 for a special Earth Day talk in the Los Alamos Nature Center’s planetarium. Climate scientists overwhelmingly agree that Earth’s climate has changed significantly in the past few decades, but some people argue that this is natural because Earth has experienced large historical climate changes like ice ages in its history. Join Wallace to dive into this argument at his talk, which begins at 6 p.m.

Wallace will take a look at climate changes like ice ages that occur due to periodic changes in the Earth’s orbit or the solar heat out. The audience will learn about these long-term orbital cycles, discuss the variability of the Sun’s heat output and take a short look at possible historical planetary climate changing processes, such as volcanoes and asteroid impacts.

In addition to this talk, the nature center will premiere the full-dome film “EXPLORE” at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27 after the Earth Day Festival. This exciting new film looks at how human innovation and the achievements of individuals can change the world. The film explores a variety of science topics in a modern and accessible way and the story revolves around the ambition to colonize Mars.

Seating is limited for both of these events, so please call the nature center at 505-662-0460 or stop by to reserve your tickets. Admission for both programs is $6 for adults and $4 for children. Events in the planetarium are not recommended for children under the age of 4.
