The Rio Grande Gorge is one of the most dramatic geologic features in New Mexico. It starts near the Colorado border and runs about 50 miles to just southwest of Taos, and is about 800 ft deep. The Rio Grande River is visible in this photograph in the bottom of the gorge, as are the Sangre de Cristo mountains in the background. An approaching storm system adds drama to the sky.
