LAPD NEWS

Los Alamos Chief of Police Dino Sgambellone released calls for service and crime statistics Tuesday for the 12 months of 2018 which were compiled by the LAPD Records Section.

Offenses reported as crime statistics are determined by the FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) Program and are classified as crimes against persons (violent crime) and crimes against property.  The offenses of murder (homicide), manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault make up the violent crime category. Simple assault is not included in UCR. The offenses of arson, burglary, larceny, and auto theft make up the property crime category.  Both of these categories are referred to as Part I Offenses.

During the 12 months of 2018, officers responded to a total of 135 overall Part 1 Offense complaints, which represents a 7 percent increase as compared to 126 offenses in 2017.  Violent crime stayed flat at 25 offenses. Property crime increased 9 percent from 101 in 2017 to 110 in 2018.

Officers investigated 212 accidents in 2018 as compared to 186 reported during 2017, a 14 percent increase.

While many factors can contribute to crime rates within a community, the Los Alamos Police Department would like to recognize and thank our community partners for sustaining a high quality of life by contributing to our low crime rate through the combined efforts of enforcement, education, prevention, and treatment.  These efforts continue to be reflected in the fact that Los Alamos remains one of the safest communities in the nation.

LAPD  continues to encourage citizens to “harden the target” through crime reduction strategies such as securing homes and vehicles, alarms, self-defense training, and general awareness of your surroundings.  For more information on crime prevention for businesses and homes, please call Cmdr. Preston Ballew at 505.662.8236.
