NATURE CENTER NEWS

Bandelier National Monument is relatively new and inexperienced in the study of cultural astronomy. Several possible astronomy sites have been located throughout the years in the park, but the studies on these sites have been irregular.

Join Park Ranger Cecelia Thiel on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at the Los Alamos Nature Center to hear about past studies done in the Four Corners regions and their connections to sites in Bandelier National Monument. This talk is free to attend and begins at 7 p.m.

At this talk, Thiel will discuss hints on how to identify possible cultural astronomy sites and the importance of protecting and preserving these sites. No registration is required for this talk, but PEEC expects it to be popular. The nature center is open until 8 p.m. on Tuesday nights so guests are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy the center’s exhibits prior to the talk.

Thiel is currently a permanent park ranger at Bandelier National Monument in the Department of Interpretations and Fees. Her interest in cultural astronomy is a culmination of her past work as an astronomy ranger and her research as a graduate student at New Mexico Highlands University. She is one of the first recipients of the Space Explorer’s Memorial Scholarship and is the first in her family to earn a college degree.
