COUNTY NEWS RELEASE
The Los Alamos Public Library is excited to invite the public to join an open Chess Tournament from 10 a.m.–1 p.m., April 18, 2026, at Fuller Lodge. Also joining this tournament are members of the Santa Fe Chess Club and players of the Los Alamos Public Library’s weekly chess meetups.
This is the second chess tournament the Los Alamos Public Library is hosting in the last year. Previously, the tournament held inside Mesa Public Library was attended by a full house of players of all levels, including contenders who had never before competed in a tournament.
This competition will be a 5-round, Swiss-style tournament. Registration is free for all participants and can be done at kingregistration.com/event/SFR04182026. Players who do not have a United States Chess Federation rating are encouraged to enter. There will be categories of prizes for the top un-rated players, as well as a prize for our day’s overall champion.
The library also hosts a regular chess meetup every Tuesday night at Mesa Public Library from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Any person interested in learning to play chess or searching for opponents at all levels, will discover a group of chess aficionados who welcome new people to join.
“Since coming to Los Alamos last year as a student working at LANL, I’ve met new people through our Tuesday night chess club that I never would have known,” Diego Andrade Aldana said. “There’s always someone there to challenge me and improve my skills.”
This chess tournament and all events by the Los Alamos Public Library are free and open to the public. More details can be found at LosAlamosLibrary.org. For additional information, call 505.662.8250 or email aimee.doiron@losalamosnm.gov.
