TCSD NEWS RELEASE
Taos County Sheriff Steve Miera announced in a news release Monday that 19-year old Chad A. Maestas of Los Alamos died at the High Bridge in the Taos Gorge Easter Sunday afternoon.
Miera said Sheriff’s Deputies descended into the Gorge to recover Maestas. They were able to confirm that Maestas had driven into the area via US285 where bridge security noticed that he made two passes and was circling back when they attempted to intercept him. In doing so, Maestas reportedly stopped on the bridge, leaving his vehicle, and ran to the railing. Bridge security witnessed him jump over the railing.
Details as to why or what prompted Maestas to take his life are still under investigation. The latest suicide, the first of 2026, comes amid talks with the New Mexico Department of Transportation about placing a temporary barrier on the bridge until the forthcoming rail construction begins this summer.
