CITY OF ESPANOLA NEWS RELEASE
Española Mayor Dennis Tim Salazar has announced his picks for the City’s top executive positions, to serve in interim capacities pending approval by the City Council.
Salazar is appointing Michael Ortiz as Interim City Manager. Ortiz has extensive experience in business development, financial operations and analysis. He served as Executive Director for the Pueblo of Isleta Gaming Regulatory Agency, and as the Corporate Compliance Manager for Tsay Corporation/Ohkay Hotel Casino. His background also includes serving as Executive Director for the Santa Clara Pueblo Gaming Commission and General Manager of the San Felipe Casino Hollywood. He has served as the Vice-Chairman of the New Mexico Responsible Gaming Committee, and the New Mexico Association of Indian Gaming Commission.
“Michael’s extensive experience with financial management includes budget management and auditing financial processes,” said Salazar. “He will bring a strong leadership background to the city manager’s office.” Salazar is expected to appoint him as City Manager at the organizational meeting, subject to Council approval.
Salazar selected long-time City employees to serve as the two public safety leaders. He named Española Police Lieutenant Cody Martinez to serve as Interim Police Chief, and Española Assistant Fire Chief John Wickersham to serve as Interim Fire Chief. Martinez has over 14 years’ experience working as an officer with the City. Wickersham has been with the City for almost 19 years. “I am confident these appointments will provide continuity and stability for the departments,” said Salazar.
