NMDOT NEWS RELEASE

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is actively preparing for the annual Good Friday pilgrimage to El Santuario de Chimayó, a tradition that draws thousands of walkers from across the region.

Crews have been working for weeks to prepare and will start 12-hour shifts this evening and continue through Saturday to ensure pedestrian safety along key routes.

To support the pilgrimage, NMDOT has implemented a range of safety measures:

  • Roadways are being swept, and cattle guards covered to accommodate foot traffic.
  • More than 150 orange barrels and approximately 250 safety signs have been placed along pilgrimage routes.
  • Walkers will be directed to use on/off ramps at each interchange between Santa Fe and Cuyamungue.
  • At the Cuyamungue Interchange, walkers will be routed onto the east frontage road via barrels and signage to avoid highway travel.
  • Temporary stop signs will be placed at interchange points to allow pedestrian crossing.
  • Additional signage and electronic message boards will be installed along N.M. 76 and N.M. 503 to alert drivers to the increased pedestrian presence.
  • Portable light plants will illuminate high-traffic areas including:
    • Pojoaque Wellness Center
    • Intersections of N.M. 503 with CR 84 and CR 98
    • Intersection of N.M. 103 and N.M. 76
    • N.M. 76 at mile marker 8 (Apple Shed)
  • Trash receptacles will be placed along traditional walking paths to help maintain a clean environment.

Safety Tips for Participants:

  • Use designated pedestrian pathways and obey all signage.
  • Avoid walking on the roadway when possible.
  • Wear light-colored or reflective clothing, especially during early morning or evening hours.
  • Dress in layers to adapt to changing weather conditions.
  • Carry a flashlight, water, and snacks.
  • Walk with others and let someone know your route.
  • Please do not litter—use provided trash bins.

The NMDOT encourages both walkers and drivers to be extra vigilant during this time to ensure a safe and respectful pilgrimage.
