We would like to express our gratitude to Representative Christine Chandler for her leadership in sponsoring and championing HB 99, a long-needed step toward meaningful medical malpractice reform in New Mexico.
Throughout this process, Representative Chandler listened carefully to her constituents, thoroughly researched this complex issue, and then worked diligently to advance thoughtful solutions. Passing this legislation required navigating significant resistance and complex competing interests, making its success a notable achievement. This was no small feat!
HB 99 moves New Mexico toward a more balanced malpractice framework, bringing us closer in alignment with neighboring states like Colorado, while preserving patients’ rights to seek justice when medical negligence occurs.
Improving the malpractice environment is not only about supporting physicians; it is also about supporting patients. A more stable and predictable system helps recruit and retain healthcare professionals, expands access to care, and strengthens the overall quality and safety of our healthcare system. By creating a fairer balance between accountability and sustainability, this reform has the potential to benefit patients and providers alike.
Representative Chandler’s willingness to tackle this difficult issue deserves recognition and appreciation. We thank you, Representative Chandler.
